6.4 Extension of adaptive meshing in ABAQUS/Standard

Benefits: Enhancements to the adaptive meshing facility allow application of arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) mesh smoothing to a broader number of elements in ABAQUS/Standard. These enhancements focus on providing a flexible user interface for describing mesh constraints as a method for describing material loss, such as through wear or ablation, from the surface of models. These enhancements are not intended to result in a general ALE-based mesh smoothing capability, with suitability for bulk deformation analysis.

Description: Adaptive mesh domains can now be defined in geometrically nonlinear static stress/displacement analysis, coupled pore fluid flow and stress analysis, and fully coupled thermal-stress analysis.

The generality of the interface for adaptive mesh constraints allows you to provide a mesh displacement that differs from the current material displacement at the free surface of the adaptive mesh domain, effectively eroding, or adding, material at the boundary. Using adaptive mesh constraints this way is an effective technique for modeling wear or ablation processes.

For general boundary shapes the most effective interface for ablation is user subroutine UMESHMOTION, where you can apply spatial mesh constraints to the nodes on the free surface in general ways according to solution-dependent variables, if needed. The user subroutine interface provides a local coordinate system that is normal to the free surface at the surface node, enabling you to describe mesh motions in this local system. UMESHMOTION is not supported in ABAQUS/CAE.
