Traffic Management is the key feature of ATM that distinguishes it from current networking protocols and makes it suitable for deployment in high-speed networks and for providing performance guarantees in an integrated environment.
ATM Forum has developed Available Bit Rate (ABR) service for fair allocation of unused capacity to data traffic. The standard gives considerable flexibility to switch designers in implementing their own resource allocation algorithms. We have been instrumental in the design and development of the service and have developed algorithms that are specially suitable for paths with large bandwidth-delay product. Such paths are common in Satellite networks but the results also apply to other networks with very high speed.
While ATM Forum has designed ABR for data traffic, much of IP traffic currently uses the unspecified bit rate (UBR) service. The two services are compared in terms of performance and buffering.
Ways to improve the performance on Satellite ATM networks are also presented.
