Developing a Better Pico-Satellite Communication System

Abstract: When NASA launches a satellite they have the resources to establish and maintain a real-time, high-bandwidth connection to the satellite. However, more universities are running experiments with low-cost cubesat pico-satellites in space and a new, low-cost communication option needs to be developed. This research seeks to build upon communication systems used in previous cubesat launches and optimize them for a low-memory, low-bandwidth system transmitting infrared images of Earth. We believe this can be accomplished by developing a filtering and compression algorithm that only stores good images and transmits them quickly.
