47.6.4 Repairing a sliver

You can think of a sliver as a piece of extra material in a face. You can repair an unwanted sliver and remove it from from a face of a three-dimensional solid or shell or from a two-dimensional planar part. You must select the face containing the sliver to repair and two points from the face. ABAQUS/CAE uses the two points to divide the selected face into two regions. It then deletes the smaller region (the sliver) and retains the larger region. If the smaller region is relatively large compared with its neighbors, the operation fails. The operation to repair a sliver is stored as a feature of the part; as a result, you can use the Model Tree to delete or suppress the operation.

To repair a sliver:

  1. From the main menu bar, select ToolsRepair.

ABAQUS/CAE displays the Geometry Repair Tools dialog box.

Tip:  You can also remove a sliver using the tool, located with the repair tools in the Part module toolbox. For a diagram of the repair tools in the toolbox, see An overview of repair techniques, Section 47.2.

  2. From the dialog box, select Repair sliver and click OK.

  3. Select the face that you want to repair. You can select the face from the viewport or select an existing set containing the face.

Note:  The default selection method is based on the selection method you most recently employed. To revert to the other method, click Select in Viewport or Sets on the right side of the prompt area.

Tip:  If you are unable to select the desired face, you can change the selection behavior by clicking the selection options tool in the prompt area. For more information, see Using the selection options, Section 6.3.

  4. Select a point that defines a corner of the sliver.

  5. Select a second point that defines the opposite corner of the sliver.

  6. ABAQUS/CAE draws a line between the two selected points and removes the resulting small face.

  7. If you have finished repairing the part, you should check its validity by clicking mouse button 3 on the part in the Model Tree and selecting Update validity from the menu that appears.
