4.4.7 Editing text annotation attributes

You can change the following attributes of text annotations:

If you are creating a new annotation, ABAQUS/CAE applies many of your customizations not only to the current annotation but also to any new annotations you subsequently create. If you are editing an existing annotation, ABAQUS/CAE applies your changes only to the selected annotation.

You can also copy a text annotation and its attributes and edit them to create a new text annotation. For more information, see The Annotation Manager, Section 4.2.3.

To edit text annotation attributes:

  1. Use one of the following methods to access the Text Editor dialog box:

    • Select a text annotation from the Annotation Manager, and click Edit.

    • Select ViewportEdit Annotations or in the Viewport toolbox, and double-click a text annotation in the viewport.

    • Create a new text annotation in the viewport; ABAQUS/CAE opens the editor after you select the text position in the viewport.

  2. If you are creating a new annotation, you can edit the name of the text annotation.

  3. To display or suppress a box outlining the text, toggle Show bounding box. The bounding box visually separates the text from the underlying model or results.

  4. Type the desired text.

When typing a text annotation, you can use standard mouse and keyboard editing techniques such as backspace, copy, and paste; press [Enter] to start a new line.

  5. To customize the background, click one of the following:

    • Match viewport to match the background to the viewport color.

    • Transparent to eliminate the background and show only the text.

    • Other color to reveal other background color options.

    If you selected Other color:

    1. Click the color sample .

ABAQUS/CAE displays the Select Color dialog box.

    2. Use one of the methods in the Select Color dialog box to select a new color. For more information, see Customizing colors, Section 3.2.9.

    3. Click OK to close the Select Color dialog box.

The color sample changes to the selected color.

  6. Customize the text font.

    1. Click Set Font.

The Select Font dialog box appears.

    2. Use the Select Font dialog box to choose the font characteristics you want. For more information, see Customizing fonts, Section 3.2.8.

    3. When you are done, click OK to implement your changes and to close the Select Font dialog box.

  7. Choose the text color.

    1. Click the color sample .

ABAQUS/CAE displays the Select Color dialog box.

    2. Use one of the methods in the dialog box to select a new color. For more information, see Customizing colors, Section 3.2.9.

    3. Click OK to close the Select Color dialog box.

The color sample changes to the selected color.

  8. Choose Left, Center, or Right justification to arrange the text within the bounding box area.

  9. Enter a rotation angle (in degrees) to orient the text; 0° is horizontal.

ABAQUS/CAE rotates the text counterclockwise about the Reference Point.

  10. Click the Location tab.

  11. Select a new Reference Point.

The reference point is the point where a text annotation is attached to its anchor point; ABAQUS/CAE also uses the reference point as the center of rotation if you rotate the text. The following methods are available:

    Predefined

Select this method to use a predefined point of the text bounding box geometry as the reference point. The available points are the bounding box corners, the center, and the midpoint of each edge. The definition of the reference point changes if you modify the annotation text.

    % Text X, Y

Select this method to define the reference point based on the position of the lower left bounding box corner and the bounding box size. Enter the reference point as a percentage of the total width and height of the text bounding box. As with the Predefined method, the reference point definition changes if you modify the text.

Note:  ABAQUS/CAE determines the lower left corner position based on a 0° rotation angle. If you rotate the text, the corner position is also rotated accordingly.

Tip:  You can select a reference point outside of the bounding box by entering values less than 0% or greater than 100%.

  12. Enter new X- and Y-values to change the Offset, in millimeters, between the reference point and the anchor point.

Note:  After you close the Text Editor, you can also change the offset by dragging the text annotation in the viewport. For more information, see Manipulating annotations in the current viewport, Section 4.4.5.

  13. Select a new anchor point; the following methods are available:

Tip:  To avoid changing the position of the annotation, use the Pick Anchor button to change the anchor point and recalculate the Offset between the anchor point and the annotation.

    Predefined

Select this method to anchor the annotation to a predefined point of viewport geometry. The available points are the viewport corners, the midpoint of each edge, and the center of the viewport. The anchor point definition changes if you modify the viewport shape.

    % Viewport X, Y

Select this method to anchor your annotation to a point based on the position of the lower left viewport corner and the viewport size. Enter the anchor point as a percentage of the total width and height of the current viewport. As with the Predefined method, the anchor point definition changes if you modify the viewport shape.

    Model point X, Y, Z

Select this method to anchor your annotation to a point on the model. Enter the model coordinates of the new anchor point in the text field. The anchor point definition, and any annotation linked to it, changes if you manipulate the model. For example, if you rotate the model in the viewport, the anchor point and the arrow endpoint will rotate with it.

    Pick Anchor button

Select this method to change the anchor point without changing the current position of the annotation.

ABAQUS/CAE hides the Arrow Editor dialog box and prompts you to select a point from the viewport. Alternatively, you can pick one of the predefined viewport points from the list in the prompt area or click Pick From Model to pick a model node or vertex from the viewport or to enter the coordinates of a model point in the prompt area.

Each selection type corresponds to one of the preceding anchor point selection methods. After you make your selection, the Text Editor dialog box reappears with your selection indicated in the appropriate anchor selection method and the offset value recalculated for the new anchor point.

  14. Click Apply to see your changes in the viewport.

Note:  Once you have applied your changes in the viewport, you cannot recover the original settings except by recreating the annotation or editing the options again.

  15. Click OK to close the Text Editor.
