7.6 Müschenborn-Sonne forming limit diagram (MSFLD) in ABAQUS/Explicit

Products: ABAQUS/Explicit  ABAQUS/CAE

Benefits: The Müschenborn-Sonne forming limit diagram provides a criterion for the onset of necking instability in sheet metals that takes into account the influence of the deformation path.

Description: ABAQUS/Explicit offers a new damage initiation criterion for necking instability in sheet metals based on the Müschenborn-Sonne forming limit diagram (MSFLD). The new criterion is integrated within the framework of progressive damage and failure (Progressive damage and failure, Section 19.1.1 of the ABAQUS Analysis User's Manual). The MSFLD criterion for necking instability takes into account the effects of the deformation path on the limit strains of sheet metals. Therefore, the method provides a clear advantage over the traditional forming limit diagram (FLD), which is valid only for linear paths. An additional advantage of the MSFLD criterion is that it can make predictions that agree remarkably well with Marciniak and Kuczynski criterion at significantly less computational cost than the Marciniak and Kuczynski criterion. See Progressive damage and failure of ductile metals, Section 2.2.20 of the ABAQUS Verification Manual, for a comparative analysis of these two criteria.
