4.15 Defining a nonstructural mass

Products: ABAQUS/Standard  ABAQUS/Explicit  ABAQUS/CAE

Benefits: You can include in a model the mass contribution from features that have negligible structural stiffness by smearing that mass over an element set that is typically adjacent to these features.

Description: You can specify a nonstructural mass in the form of a “mass per unit volume,” “mass per unit area,” “mass per unit length,” or “total mass.” The specification in the form of a “mass per unit area” is applicable only to conventional shell, membrane, and surface elements; whereas the form of a “mass per unit length” is applicable only to beam and truss elements. The remaining forms are applicable to all solid, shell, membrane, beam, and truss elements. You can define a nonstructural mass over an element set that contains a mixture of various element types applicable to a given form of the specification. When a “total mass” is specified, you can distribute it over the elements in the element set in proportion to either their “structural” mass or their volume.
