With the development of smart phones, video streaming over mobile wireless networks has suddenly taken a huge surge in the last few years. This is particularly so in regions of the world where wired infrastructure is lacking and wireless provides the main means of communication as well as Internet access. Delivering streaming video over wireless requires innovations in all protocol layers of the networking architecture. At the application layer, new object based video coding, error resilience and error concealment designed specifically for the coding used, are important. New transport protocols designed to provide delay constrained reliable delivery, network layer forwarding that distinguishes real-time traffic from the other best-effort data traffic are some examples of challenges that need to be researched. Wireless datalinks designed to reach long distances and that tailor transmissions based on content, device type, and location are important along with energy efficiency techniques to save battery life in mobile devices. Finally, at the physical layer, proper selection of frequency, coding, and weather effects will be presented.
