R. Jain, "Passive Optical Networks (PON): Recent Developments and Issues" Invited Presentation at Conference on Optical Transmission Systems and Equipment for WDM Networking II, SPIE Volume 5247, Orlando Florida, September 7-11, 2003.

Passive optical networks are an economical alternative for access networks. Due to the absence of active components in the distribution network, PONs are also very reliable. Two new standards EPON and GPON are being developed in IEEE and ITU, respectively. The key differences in these two standards and their respective issues will be discussed in this presentation.
