In the last five years dense wavelength division multiplexing networks have moved from research labs to deployment.

In this tutorial talk, we begin with recent DWDM records and present a sample of recent products and applications. Key technological developments that made DWDM possible will be explained. The discussion includes various recent fibers and issues that limit the bit rate and distance.

The survey includes recent product announcements from startups in this area including wavelength routers that allow multi-hop networks without intermediate electronic conversion.

New techonogies such solitons and Optical Time Division Multiplexing (OTDM), broadcast and select LANs will also be described.

This is a tutorial (as opposed to research) level technical talk. This talk covers the following topics:
