17.18 Creating an orphan mesh part

Select MeshCreate Mesh Part from the main menu bar to create an orphan mesh part from the meshed part or assembly. You can also create an orphan mesh part from selected part instances that you have meshed. If you have meshed only some regions of the assembly or the selected part instances, ABAQUS/CAE creates an orphan mesh part from only those meshed regions; unmeshed regions are not included in the orphan mesh part.

An orphan mesh part contains no feature information and is defined by a collection of nodes, elements, surfaces, and sets. You cannot add geometric features to an orphan mesh part; however, you can use the mesh editing tools to modify its nodes and elements. For more information, see What can I do with the Edit Mesh toolset?, Section 41.1.

Creating an orphan mesh part:

  1. From the Object field in the context bar, select a meshed part or select the assembly.

  2. From the main menu bar, select MeshCreate Mesh Part.

  3. If the assembly contains more than one part instance, you must select the part instances that you want to include in the mesh part. In the prompt area, click Done to indicate that you have finished selecting part instances.

  4. In the prompt area, enter the name of the new part.

    ABAQUS/CAE creates the meshed part.
