15.15.4 Configuring tangential behavior for connector friction

You use the Tangential Behavior tabbed page in the connector section editor to select a friction formulation for predefined and user-defined connector friction models. For more information, see Using the basic Coulomb friction model” in “Frictional behavior, Section 30.1.5 of the ABAQUS Analysis User's Manual. You can choose from the following:

To configure tangential behavior using the Penalty friction formulation:

  1. Display the connector section editor by following the procedure outlined in Defining friction, Section 15.15.3, and select the Tangential Behavior tabbed page.

  2. From the Friction formulation field, select Penalty.

  3. On the Friction Coefficient tabbed page, enter the following data:

    Friction Coeff

    Friction coefficient, .

    Slip Rate

If desired, toggle on Use slip-rate-dependent data and enter the slip rate, .

    Contact Pressure

If desired, toggle on Use contact-pressure-dependent data and enter the contact pressure, p.

    Temp

If desired, toggle on Use temperature-dependent data and enter the average temperature at the contact point, , between the two contact surfaces.

    Field 1, Field 2, etc.

If desired, specify the Number of field variables and enter the average value of the first field variable, , the average value of the second field variable, , etc.

  4. On the Shear Stress tabbed page, specify the shear stress limit.

    No limit

Indicates no limit on the equivalent shear stress.

    Specify

Enter the equivalent shear stress limit, ; that is, the maximum achievable value of the equivalent shear stress.

  5. On the Elastic Slip tabbed page, choose a method for modifying the allowable elastic slip (applies only to ABAQUS/Standard analyses).

    Fraction of characteristic model dimension

Enter the ratio of the allowable maximum elastic slip to a characteristic model dimension. The default value is 0.0001.

    Absolute distance

Enter the absolute magnitude of the allowable elastic slip, , to be used in the stiffness method for sticking friction.

To configure tangential behavior using the Static-Kinetic Exponential Decay friction formulation:

  1. Display the connector section editor by following the procedure outlined in Defining friction, Section 15.15.3, and select the Tangential Behavior tabbed page.

  2. From the Friction formulation field, select Static-Kinetic Exponential Decay.

  3. On the Friction Coefficients tabbed page, choose the exponential decay definition and enter the coefficients or test data.

    • Coefficients. Provide the static friction coefficient, kinetic friction coefficient, and decay coefficient directly.

      Static Coeff

Enter the static friction coefficient, .

      Kinetic Coeff

Enter the kinetic friction coefficient, .

      Decay Coeff

      Enter the decay coefficient, .

    • Test data. Provide test data points to fit the exponential model.

      Friction Coeff

      • Enter the static coefficient of friction specified at .

      • Enter the dynamic friction coefficient, an experimental measurement taken at a reference slip rate, .

      • Enter the kinetic friction coefficient, . This value corresponds to the asymptotic value of the friction coefficient at infinite slip rate, .

      Slip Rate

Enter the reference slip rate, , used to measure the dynamic friction coefficient.
