8.9 Improved volumetric formulation of first-order and reduced-integration solid elements

Product: ABAQUS/Standard

Benefits: The treatment of the volumetric component of the deformation of first-order and reduced-integration three-dimensional and axisymmetric solid elements has been improved. Differences in results due to the modified formulation should be small unless the hydrostatic pressure is considerably higher than the effective shear modulus.

Description: The implementation of first-order elements and reduced-integration solid elements in ABAQUS/Standard was improved by replacing the volume change at the integration points with the average volumetric change with respect to the deformed configuration; this technique is known as the “uniform strain formulation” and is described in detail in Solid isoparametric quadrilaterals and hexahedra, Section 3.2.4 of the ABAQUS Theory Manual. The linearization of the new formulation leads to additional terms in the initial stress stiffness; the presence of these additional terms has been shown to alleviate stability problems under highly confined configurations.
