4.1 Search terms and search phrases

Search terms are individual words used to locate information. You can enter one or more search terms in the search field. If multiple search terms are entered without quotation marks around the words or hyphens between the terms, the search procedure displays hits where:

  • The search terms appear in any order

  • The search terms may or may not be adjacent

  • All search terms appear within the proximity criterion

For example, if you search for finite strain, you will find occurrences of "finite" and "strain" within the same HTML page; the result is order independent.

Search phrases are made up of multiple search terms enclosed in quotation marks or connected with hyphens. The search procedure displays hits only when the search terms appear in the order specified in the search field. For example, if you search for finite-strain, you will find occurrences of "finite strain"; the result is order dependent. For additional information about searching techniques, see Conducting a search of the HTML documentation, Section 4.4, and Using the Advanced Search options, Section 4.5.
