Products: ABAQUS/Standard ABAQUS/CAE
Benefits: A new stabilization method addresses multi-body contact problems in which contact is not present in increment 1 and, therefore, rigid body modes exist initially.
Description: You can add viscous stabilization to any or all contact pairs using a new form of stabilization, similar to the existing stabilization method, with some important differences:
The new form of stabilization applies to both normal and tangential motions, the ratio of which you can control.
The damping coefficient is calculated based on the stiffness of the underlying material instead of on the initial opening.
You can modify the calculated damping coefficient; you can ramp it down or keep it constant.
The damping works over a limited opening range, which you can control.
You can apply this form of stabilization to the whole model with overrides for individual contact pairs. (In ABAQUS/CAE the stabilization can be applied only to individual contact pairs.)
Stabilization can be applied during any step and remains in force during the step. By default, the damping is ramped down linearly to zero so that at the end of the step a solution is obtained without damping forces. The damping stresses CDSTRESS and the dissipated energy ALLSD are available for output. The stabilization specified in one step is not active in subsequent steps.
