10.2 Performance improvements for deformable elements declared as rigid

Benefits: In some situations the performance of ABAQUS/Standard analyses containing deformable elements declared as rigid has been significantly improved compared to earlier versions of ABAQUS/Standard.

Description: The magnitude of the performance gains in Version 6.5 for analyses containing deformable elements declared as rigid depends on several factors. The performance gains are greatest for the following situations:

The ratio of deformable elements making up the rigid body to the total number of elements in the model is large.
No loads are applied to the deformable elements that have been declared as rigid.
No output is requested for the deformable elements that have been declared as rigid.

The most significant performance improvements are attained for models where the first and third situations are combined. The “Geneva mechanism” example problem is representative of such a model. In this example a factor of 2.5 improvement in wall clock time over Version 6.4 is observed using a single processor on a Linux/x86-32 workstation.
