6.11 Enhancements to the iterative equation solver

Product: ABAQUS/Standard

Benefits: The iterative linear equation solver now supports parallel execution on distributed memory hardware. The algorithm for handling deformable-to-deformable contact has been substantially reworked to improve performance and memory use as well as parallel scaling. Additional improvements to robustness, memory use, and performance have been made.

Description: The enhancements to the iterative solver can be divided into two categories. First, parallel calculations are now supported on distributed memory hardware. For large models this can substantially reduce the execution time as well as take advantage of memory on distributed memory clusters. Second, robustness and performance improvements have been made, with an emphasis on handling deformable-to-deformable contact in a more natural way within the domain decomposition algorithm. For problems involving large surfaces in contact, the new algorithm is expected to outperform the previous version with respect to run time, memory use, and parallel scaling. In addition, many of the internal algorithms in the iterative solver have been reworked to improve robustness, overall memory use, and performance for more general classes of problems.
